How to Make Homemade Laundry Detergent

In the spirit of Laura Ingalls, with wash day being Monday, here's a little recipe for homemade laundry detergent you can use tomorrow, Monday!

wash on Monday
iron on Tuesday
mend on Wednesday
churn on Thursday

clean on Friday

bake on Saturday

rest on Sunday

from Little House in the Big Woods

* I use these utensils for detergent making only. They all stay in the pot until I make a new batch.

You will need:

1 bar of soap (any kind you want)
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of washing soda
a big pot ( that holds more than 2 gallons)
a grater
a funnel
a long spoon
2 empty gallon jugs/containers

Grate your bar of soap into your pot.

Fill one gallon jug and pour water into pot with grated soap. Cook until the grated soap dissolves.

Add the Borax and washing soda.

Bring to a boil. It will coagulate.

Turn off the heat. Add 1 gallon of cold water. Stir well.

Pour 1 gallon of your detergent into each container.

A funnel helps tremendously.

Now you have 2 gallons of homemade laundry detergent. I use 1/2 cup per load. With the prices of detergent being outrageous, I feel really happy every time I make a batch of this.

This won't make many, if any, suds. Suds don't equal clean. It took a while to get that into my head. This detergent cleans wonderfully!

Let me know if you make any or if you have any questions.

Happy washing!

******edited to add that I now just keep my detergent in the pot I cook it in with the lid on. When I run out I make up a new batch in that pot and it's ready to go. I like saving the step of transferring into the jugs.

****** edited 8/8/2011 to address those of you with the issue of the detergent becoming too thick. Try using 1/2 of a bar of soap instead.

***** edited 7/2011 to add that the detergent should thicken / coagulate when it cools. Usually within 24 hours! ****

* Edited 1/2011 to add comment from below about cost/savings!
estimated cost is $6.00 for 576 loads (depending on soap used and amount used per load, ONE BOX of Borax and ONE BOX of Washing soda)
The savings is incredible.

As with ALL cleaning products KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN particularly if you are using recycled food type containers!!!!

☆ My friend Amy's daughter did a science experiment comparing store bought detergent and this recipe! Very cool! Check it out here

Someone asked about using Dr Bronners, I have been using it for a liquid soap and it is too gentle for us. It doesn't get the clothes really clean, I'm wondering if it's because we're in Arizona and the water is really hard.

Speaking of hard water, do you know if I need to alter the mixture or add something else to it? I know there is something to it but I can't find anything about it

Not this recipe, but another one with Liquid Dr Bronner's, and it doesn't work that great and I think it's because of the hard water!

What would happen if I add oxyclean and plain baking soda? I've been using a recipe that uses the borax, washing soda, and bar soap with oxyclean and baking soda and it works great but this recipe seems to make it go further.

Hi, I made a batch last night and by this morning, it was quite gelatinous, to the point I had to microwave it to make it liquid. The hot water in my washing machine would not melt it. Is there a way to prevent it from becoming gelatinous and stay liquid without microwaving?

i made it with Bronner' and we found it to be too gentle and didn't clean well. We're in Arizona and the water is very hard, but don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Hello Amanda I just wanted to tell you I was doing soap research because my son and I were breaking out and the dermatologist put my son and I on Dove soap unscented for sensitive skin and it made us worse so I started researching soap and found this soap called Defense Soap and also Tea Tree Castle Soap and it has changed our skin for the better within 1 week. Google about it and you will not use Dove. Google about dove and you will be shocked. I could not believe all the reactions people get from dove. So just beware.

Have you found a solution to this yet?

I am making my second batch today and I couldn't be happier! This stuff is awesome. Truth that it does not lather, but it cleans so well! Very, very pleased! Thank you for sharing this. I don't think I will ever buy laundry soap again now that I have this recipe. :)

Should be good in an HE, it has few if any suds, and that is why hat HE'S are about, less suds...more cleaning...

The math is ridiculous for this recipe. At half a cup per load you get a max of 64 loads per batch at 1/2 cup per load. I doubt you can actually get the ingredients for $6 but assuming you can that is 9.4 cents per load, not counting your electricity and water costs for making the stuff and cleaning up after. You can easily find commercial detergent for 8 cents per load. Unless this recipe is wrong you will not save any money using this laundry soap and are in fact using a more expensive product. The claimed 576 loads requires over 76 gallons of soap. It may work as well or better than commercial detergent but don't expect to save any money.

See post above yours by anonymous...link there to make your own washing soda. Because baking soda washing soda two totally different items - made by same company.

Mine didnt maybe you had to muchbin pot before adding washing soda and borax

Anonymous said...

It was in earlier post to boil just a lil while 3 mins

She said above that all soaps vary and every batch with different soap will be different consistency. And you were supossed to have 2 jugs..? Maybe that is problem? If you have correct amounts and it was to thick she said above to use 1/2 bar of soap.

Anonymous said...

It would also be 1/2 strength so not cheaper?? You would need to use 1 cup instead of 1/2 c

Anonymous said...

You so didnt have to throw that away. Could have cut bottom out and let fall into 5 gal bucket and probably just scoop 1/2 c that way ey?

I saw a few comments asking if you can use the pot you make the laundry soap in to also cook in after cleaning it very well, but I never saw a response. So do you think it is possible to use the same pot to make the soap and cook in? Thank you for your help.

Washing soda is in the laundry aisle at most stores

SI said...

I am missing something...a gallon is 16 cups. If you use 1/2 cup per wash, 2 gallons would give 64 loads, not 576; big difference! 2022 price of borax, washing soda and fels naptha soap at walmart is $10.17 so this is not as cost effective if you compare to store-bought generic detergent. Likely healthier but someone please explain how to get 576 loads from 2 gallons please??

Any good grocery store will have washing soda, right next to the Borax.

A higher pH level than conventional tap water can be produced with the use of alkaline water dispensers They achieve this by adding minerals like calcium and magnesium to a drink that already has an electrolyte balance. The alkaline water dispenser may remove non-metallic impurities from the raw material, enhancing the water's flavor.
